Sound Off

I was reading in the paper about where the Kansas GOP gave a commendation to Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris. Was that done on the taxpayers' time? Did she come to Kansas on their time? Who paid for it?

The Kansas GOP paid for Harris' plane ticket and hotel room, said Kari Austin, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party.

Harris did not charge a speaker's fee. She ate the same meals as other Kansas Day attendees. She was here on her own time: Friday evening, Saturday morning.

The party also paid for the framed picture of John Brown presented to Harris.

"There's a common perception out there that (political) parties get money from the government, but that's simply not the case. We don't get any money from the government," Austin said.
