How low can you turn your thermostat so you don't have a problem with your pipes freezing?

As long as your house's plumbing was installed correctly, there should be no danger of freezing pipes, said Kevin Chaney of Chaney Incorporated. Most home thermostats don't go below 50 degrees, anyway, he said, which is still well above freezing.

Those houses with pipes near outside walls may have to take extra precautions against freezing pipes, such as allowing a trickle of water to run continuously or wrapping pipes with insulation, Chaney said.
