Why is the city spending more than $1 million to repair the Bowersock Dam?

Assistant City Manager Debbie Van Saun said: "The city is paying for the repairs because the dam is crucial in maintaining the water pool upstream for the intake structures at the Kaw River Water Treatment Plant. The cost is due to considerable deterioration of the existing structure over the past several years most of which is underwater and not really noticeable. An additional cost factor is the difficulty in working in this type of environment and the safety issues associated with maintaining the boards holding back the water."
