Who is the author of the statement in the Memorial Campanile that says, "Free government does not bestow repose upon its citizens, but sets them in the vanguard of battle to defend the liberty of every man"?,/b>
According to Kansas University, the words were penned by Allen Crafton, founder and former chairman of the speech and drama department at KU.
A story about the inscription, located in KU's archives, said that Crafton was given the job to create an inscription and wrote several that were discarded by a committee until the final one was approved.
One of those discarded inscriptions was, "Until hate dies, we shall have threat of wars. While love endures, we shall have hope of peace."
