Why don't the new Lawrence buses have ads on the sides to offset the cost of running them?

Karin Rexroad, the city transit administrator, said it was a decision of the Public Transit Advisory Committee and Lawrence City Commission.

"Based on research of similar transit systems, it was discovered that minimal income is generated from interior advertising on vehicles," she said. "Exterior advertising can generate substantial revenue if staff time is available or if you have the finances to outsource to a marketing/advertising firm.

"The city felt that advertising should not be considered on the transit system until our identity on the "T" is established. PTAC will review our advertising policy in 2002."
