What is the criteria for issuing a burn permit? And if neighborhood property is damaged from the burning, who is responsible?
Paula Phillips, director of Douglas County Emergency Management, said only the city of Lawrence requires a burn permit, and people must obtain a permit from the fire station closest to where the burn will take place.
Within the townships, she said, people are encouraged to get permits but are not required to. However, people should check with their local fire departments and notify them about times they will be burning.
When burning materials, Phillips said, people must be at least 250 feet away from a house and be aware of the range land fire index issued by the National Weather Service.
