Has Lawrence ever had a drag strip and, if so, when?
Lawrence Dragway opened at what is now the 15th Street and Wakarusa Drive area in the late 1950s and closed in the fall of 1986 after the land was purchased by Alvamar Inc.
An eighth-mile track, instead of the standard quarter-mile facility, Lawrence Dragway was regarded as a trainer track and never played host to a major event. However, in its heyday, between 150 and 200 hot rods, quarter-midgets, jalopies and funny cars mostly from the Topeka and Kansas City areas would compete on Saturday nights and Sundays. Wakarusa Drive, now a major north-south arterial, was known as Dragstrip Road until the city commission changed the name in the early 1980s.
