I rent a house in Baldwin with asbestos siding. Is the landlord responsible for asbestos removal? Who in Baldwin is responsible to see that is done?

Baldwin City Administrator Larry Paine said the city doesn't require the removal of asbestos siding.

Mike Heideman, public information officer for Kansas Department of Health and Environment, said a building can contain asbestos. As long as the material stays intact and is undisturbed, there should be no health problems.

Before a building is demolished, Heideman said, it has to be inspected for asbestos. If asbestos is found, the state law requires certified contractors to submit a formal notification to KDHE at least 10 days before demolition begins.
