Are there any city ordinances governing how fences are built between residential property? Is the person who builds the fence required to place the good side, the finished side, on the outside toward their neighbor?
Chief Building Inspector Gene Shaughnessy said there is no regulation requiring a "good neighbor" fence, but the city does encourage everyone to be a good neighbor. If someone intends to build a fence, it is always a good idea to discuss it with neighbors, Shaughnessy said. This often saves debates over issues such as property lines, fence heights and which side is preferred to face the neighbor. If there are questions about fences, call Shaughnessy at 832-3100.
