Q: Is it safe to swim in Clinton Lake and Lone Star Lake? Does anyone check the bacteria levels in these lakes?

The bacteria levels are checked by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

According to the latest samplings, Clinton and Lone Star lakes are both safe for swimming.

Sharon Watson, KDHE's public information officer, offered the following statement on the lakes' water quality:

"Both lakes are designated for contact recreation. Both allow skiing and have swimming beaches. Past fecal coliform data have not indicated a health problem at either lake, although Clinton has episodes of excessive algal production due to nutrient enrichment.

"While the eutrophication problem has primarily focused on drinking water supply issues, it would also diminish the ability to fully utilize the lake's potential for recreation."
