Becky Carter

Mass of Christian Burial for Becky (Burgin) Carter, 76, Lawrence, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 14, 2018 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrence. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery and an informal Celebration of Life will follow at 23rd Street Brewery.

She passed away Monday, July 9, 2018 at her home.

Becky was born August 11, 1941 in Pittsburg, KS the daughter of Hugh E. Burgin Jr. and Cleo Burgin.

She married Edward Cole Carter on February 21, 1961 in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Survivors include her children, Kelli Carter, Kayla Riley, Hugh Carter, and Rebecca Chavez; 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 55 years, Edward Cole Carter; brother, Hugh E. Burgin III; son, Tye Chadwicke Carter; and grandson, Rees Burgin Carter.

Becky attended Pittsburg State University where she was a baton twirler with the band, was awarded Queen of the 1960 Honorary Brigade Commander Military Ball and met her husband "Eddie."

Becky served as the Executive Vice President of the Lawrence Board of Realtors from 1977 to 1996.

Becky is remembered for her incredible sense of humor paired with her quick wit, her occasionally sharp tongue, and her unyielding strength and persistence. She knew how to have fun and with the exception of taking her responsibilities quite seriously, she rarely acted her age. She worked harder on family vacations than most people work all year: packing coolers, making sandwiches, doing laundry, refereeing fights, and telling wonderful made-up stories about the families in the houses she passed by. She managed to have five kids dressed to the nines, in the car and ready for church on time every Sunday, only to wait 10 more minutes for their father to get ready. She diagnosed boundless bouts of strep throat, stomach flu, 24-hour bugs, and an occasional drunken dog. She dished out consequences, took back privileges, and laid on the mom-guilt whenever necessary. She was the spectator and cheerleader for all. In addition to raising her five children, she then raised three of her grandchildren.

The family will greet friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2018 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Memorial Contributions may be made in her name to the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
