"They also said if the plows cover your walk or you are sick/elderly/out of town, they will not fine you. If you have a sidewalk and you are in good health, you have no excuse. " Maybe so, but you probably will have to go to court to set aside an incorrect fine and that will cost how much in court costs??? Fines are a bad idea. I always shovel my sidewalk, but often my neighbors do not. I would never, however, presume to make judgments when they do not. I do not know their circumstances or reasons. Yes, lazy college students are a drag. So are unaffordable fines during a terrible recession.

Nope. Not only did I not shovel my sidewalk on Tuesday, but I didn't shovel it on Wednesday either. In fact, only one person in our whole neighborhood shoveled his walk -- it looks a little out of place.

terrapin2 thank you! People go out and walk in all conditions. My daughter walked to school and never missed a day because of colds or illness while her driven friends were falling by the wayside. (pun intended) What do people think happens to the human foot or leg when it walks though snow. Are there alien parasites waiting for a host? Think of how much money people pay to go to Vail, Colorado and like places to wallow in snow. You can do it here for free. I have this suggestion. Put padded barriers at the bottom of 12th and 13th streets around Tennessee when it really, really snows, and let everyone sled down. Good idea, what? Idle question, is there an Terrapin One?

Wow- People are so full of sweetness and light. It may be zero, but yes people still use the sidewalks. "Only in Lawrence?" really? It's called dressing for the conditions. I'm pretty sure the people that walk to work or ride their bike or take the bus still have to do that even in cold weather. Unless when it snows the city gives these people a car I'm pretty sure they still have to walk. They also said if the plows cover your walk or you are sick/elderly/out of town, they will not fine you. If you have a sidewalk and you are in good health, you have no excuse. "I don't use it so I'm not doing it" is just a bad attitude. Happy freakin' holidays to you. I'm sure there are services in this town that you use and others don't, yet we still have to pay for them. We got no benefit from clearing 4-5 neighbors/businesses walks when we didn't have to, but we did it anyway. It's called being a citizen of a community. I'm pretty sure the guy I saw walking to the bus this morning and the father walking to pick up his kids from school appreciated it.

WHY 5 years, 4 months ago

I don't walk on it so I don't clear it. If you want to walk on it you clear it. The benefit should come with the burden.

Yeah I did and then the scraper came by and covered it again. Not doing it a second time. Fine me.

"hujiko", whats wrong with JoCo? Its a lot better county than Douglas!

0

lmatt 5 years, 4 months ago

Who would be using a sidewalk anyway when its 0 degrees? I guess only in Lawrence!

lmatt 5 years, 4 months ago

This rule is SO STUPID! Will the city clean your sidewalk after they throw the snow from the street onto the sidewalk???

Don't get me started on JoCo

My neighborhood is great about clearing our walks and helping elderly neighbors with theirs. There is a house that a JoCo parent bought his kid who lives there with 3 of his buddies. Poor guys are busy with college and apparently can't afford a snow shovel. Probably have bad backs and allergies to sweating. Should we establish a fund to help such underprivileged youth with clearing their sidewalks?

pooter, I shovel it as a courtesy to all the school kids and other people that use it. I kinda figured the reason was obvious.

pooter 5 years, 4 months ago

Why shovel it? As of 8:45 pm it is still snowing. The 24 hour clock hasn't even started yet.*

This is one of the reasons I left Lawrence.I did have a friend come over and shovel the areas I need to get out.Good thing I bought a 4 ft reflector to put by the culvert, when I came home, the snow plow had completely buried the ditch and culvert, no way to tell where the drive was.

This is a thank you ... to people in my neighborhood who shovel my sidewalk!!!! I am lucky!!!! On snow days ...it has been my brother, Mike or my neighbors on either side of my house, Phil of Buzz, who shovel the walk.
