Description
ONLY OPEN FRIDAYS FOR SUMMER MONTHS.
First-time visitors to Abe and Jake's might think they just walked into Allen Fieldhouse due to the immense space inside. If bars were dinosaurs, A&J's would be a megasaurus.
Abe and Jake's sits on the north edge of Downtown Lawrence where Mass. St. meets the Kansas River.
Two huge bars. A cozy pub. A spacious patio looking out on the river.
There are also several pool tables and dart boards scattered around the many tiers inside. Two huge bars. A fountain. A sculpture toad thing.
Oh yeah, and there's a huge stage that has seen the likes of Vanilla Ice and Color me Badd (and less popular acts like John Mayer, Blues Traveler, The Roots, Karl Denson, and Maroon5).
The building that houses the current business began its life in the 1880s as the Consolidated Barbed Wire Company. In its prime, over 300 employees kept the building buzzing. Over the years, it went through several hands, housing many different businesses until it was semi-abandoned in the 1980s. The building quickly fell into disrepair until it was purchased by its current ownership who spent almost ten years restoring and remodeling the inside. Today, it houses one of the premier live music venues in the Midwest.
