Pastor Matt Cox speaks during a July 29 EastLake Church service at South Middle School. The School auditorium was transformed into a sanctuary of sorts for the service. The church has been splitting time primarily between the school and the Lawrence Holiday Inn Convention Center, but members hope to find a permanent location.
A temporary sign outside South Middle School marks the location of EastLake Church services. Volunteers arrive three hours before the first service to set up for the morning.
Visual artist John Sebelius as made a documentary, "Searching for Sturgis," about the famous motorcycle rally. He says he learned for a national dust up that followed a controversial board game he created when he was 21.
A scale model of the proposed Sandrat sculpture and plaza was made by University of Kansas Professor Emeritus of Art Elden Tefft. The sculpture will stand about 3 feet tall and will sit on a curved limestone bench which spans 12 feet. The proposed site for the sculpture and plaza is near the new hydroelectric plant currently under construction on the north bank of the river.
Misty Dawn Warren, on harp, and Beth LePage, on guitar, comprise Angel Road. The Lawrence-based gospel/bluegrass duo is working on its second album, “Sit at the Feet of Jesus.”
Annalize Sussman, a Kansas University master’s student, sings as David Neely, director of orchestral activities, conducts the KU Symphony Orchestra during a rehearsal for Opera Gala concerts. The Gala includes performances Thursday at the Lied Center and Saturday at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, Mo.
Heather French works on a mosaic birdbath at Van Go Mobile Arts. French was involved in the JAMS (Jobs in the Arts Make Sense) at Van Go and now has returned as a part-time paid employee while attending Johnson County Community College.
