Friends & Neighbors for October 2012

Randy Roberts, left, curator of special projects and university archivist at Pittsburg State University, talks with Jerry and Judy Niebaum after his presentation to the New Generation Society of Lawrence on Sept. 10 at the Watkins Community Museum. Roberts’ presentation about how coal shaped southeast Kansas addressed how coal mining attracted workers from more than 50 ethnic groups, the political ramifications of their harsh working conditions and their bids to organize in unions. Mark Osborn, of Lawrence, submitted the photo.
