Longtime Lawrence resident and retired Kansas University Extension Office employee Frances Benson turned 100 on March 13. Benson now resides at the Concordia Assisted Living Facility in Bella Vista, Ark. Her cousins Marilyn Klaasmeyer, Mary Jo Hadl and Margaret Davis submitted the photo.

Christopher Carter, Valley Vista High School junior varsity pitcher, pitched in his first high school game since moving from Lawrence to Arizona. Christopher, a former Lawrence High School student, is the son of Regina and Rafael Sanchez, of Surprise, Ariz., and the grandson of Pamela and Rafael Sanchez, of Lawrence.

Eric Sader, left, Shannon Gorres and Sean Weston, all of Plymouth Congregational Church of Lawrence, advocated for the Affordable Care Act in Washington, D.C., on March 26 during the Supreme Court hearing. The group visited Washington for Ecumenical Advocacy Days. As part of the visit, the Lawrence delegation encouraged members of Congress, including Rep. Kevin Yoder, Sen. Jerry Moran and Sen. Pat Roberts, and the Obama administration to enact a “Faithful Budget,” which aims to protect the common good, values each individual and helps lift the burden on the poor. K-State Research and Extension-Douglas County was recognized with the 2011 Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Board Leadership at the 2012 Northeast Extension Partnership on Jan. 19 in Manhattan. Two Lawrence students, Mariah Dickson and Trei Dudley, both of Free State High School, were among 88 Kansas City-area high schoolers recognized as High School Champions of Character by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, or NAIA. The student-athletes, chosen by high school administrators, were honored March 19 at halftime of the first semifinal game of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship. Staff Sgt. Scott, Grace, 16, Kelly, 23, and Kathleen Morgan jumped for the Kansas Jayhawks on the Great Wall of China during a visit to see Kelly, who now lives in Hangzhou, China. They were on the wall in a remote section when they realized KU was playing Purdue at that very moment back home on March 18. They didn’t find out the results of the game until hours later, but they were still glad they jumped. This photo, taken in 1970, shows longtime Theatre Lawrence patrons Bill and Barb Gaeddart, along with writer Robert Harling, who wrote the play “Steel Magnolias,” which opened in 1987 and is currently playing at Theatre Lawrence through Sunday. At the time of the photo, Bill Gaeddart, far left in the back row, was the director of the choir at the First Presbyterian Church in Natchitoches, La., which Harling, the tallest man in the back row, attended.
