The house at 636 Ill. where Mrs. Joe Sullivan was killed after a tornado struck Lawrence April 12, 1911. An April 15, 1911, story said: "Pausing a moment to close a transom and save her carpet from being ruined cost Mrs. Joe Sullivan, 636 Illinois Street, her life last night. Before she could join her son [in the cellar], the house was swept from its foundation and both inmates buried beneath a pile of wreckage. Mrs. Sullivan lived but a few minutes after being extricated."

Paddlers on the Kansas River begin the 2011 Gritty Fitty canoe and kayak race from the Eighth Street boat ramp Saturday in North Lawrence. Participants were setting off to paddle east for 50 miles to Kaw Point, where the river blends with the Missouri River.

Yard Dart, a border collie mix, grabs a frisbee out of the air and off the back of his owner, Adrian Custer, Gray Summit, Mo., on Saturday in the advanced freestyle event in the Land of Oz Kansas State Disc Dog Championships at the Youth Sports Complex, 4911 W. 27th St., in Lawrence. This was the first-ever contest, with winners qualifying for the world championships this September in Chattanooga, Tenn.
