The Jayhawks have been on the gridiron since 1890. Here are a few of the men who have led the team.

Edwin Mortimer Hopkins, a Kansas University English professor, was the Jayhawks' second coach, in 1891. He took the team to a respectable 6-1-1 record.

From 1894-1896, College Football Hall of Famer Hector Cowan led the Jayhawks to a 15-7-1 record.

Lawrence native and KU alumnus A.R. Kennedy won 83 percent of the games he coached from 1904-1910, going 53-9-4.

Better known for his success on the basketball court, Phog Allen coached the KU football team from in 1920, going 5-2-1. He's seen here giving his final instructions to his team before playing -- and winning -- the 1952 NCAA men's basketball championship game in Seattle. KU defeated St. John's, 80-63, for the title.

Pepper Rodgers, seen here in 1972 as a UCLA coach, led the Jayhawks from 1967-1970. They won the Big Eight title in 1968, and lost the 1968 Orange Bowl to Penn State.
