Kansas University junior D.J. Beshears has fine-tuned his approach to playing wide receiver this fall. The speedy and versatile Beshears will still be utilized as a kick returner, but he figures to take most of his snaps at receiver, where he has put a premium on blocking downfield for Jayhawk running backs to find more room.

Assistant Wildlife Manager David Jenkins uses specially-designed pliers to attach identification bands around this adult male mourning dove, in Weir. The doves and other birds, such as cow birds, which Jenkins simply releases — are lured into the traps with sunflower seeds.

Jason Patterson, 24, center, of Nashville, Tenn., was one of 11 Food & Freedom Riders who stopped in Lawrence Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, to speak at the Dole Institute of Politics. The group travels like the Freedom Riders did in 1961, and hopes to increase awareness about the food we eat and and agriculture and federal policies.
