Bean’s bees: Richard Bean, of Blossom Trail Bee Ranch of Baldwin City, gathers about 20,000 honey bees (weighing approximately 4 pounds) May 19 on the property of Hank and Mary Willems of rural Lawrence. It took Bean close to an hour to collect the bees. Bean discovered upon examining the queen a few days later that one side of her body had only a half of a limb left and couldn’t fly anymore.

Ending on a good note: The Free State Orchestra recognized 13 seniors in concert on May 12 in the Free State auditorium. 103 candles: Edna Schmidt celebrated her 103rd birthday on May 17 with a family dinner. Schmidt was born and raised in Eudora and has lived in Eudora and Lawrence. She started hand-piecing quilts from scrap material in 1985. Since fall of 2001, she had made 942 quilts. Pictured with Schmidt are her nieces, nephews, and her daughter. Glass art: After winning first place in an earlier local competition held in May at the Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, Ruth Glass, a resident of Prairie Commons Retirement Community in Lawrence, received the honorable mention Governor’s Award in the Art is Ageless competition May 19 in Topeka for her full-length hand-quilted coat. Flight of passage: From left, Dr. Mike Lange of Lawrence Memorial Hospital took his first solo flight Aug. 8 at the Lawrence Municipal Airport and got his shirt tail cut by his instructor Nelson Krueger. Before inter-phone communication, the flight instructor got the attention of his student in the front seat of the airplane by tugging on his shirt tail. Taking it to the next level: The Next Level Knights won the USSSA 14U AAA World Series championship during the competition held July 11-16 in Omaha, Neb. Fast siblings: Blaine Miller, left, and Ashley Miller, the children Kevin and Amy Miller of Eudora, won in their respective age divisions in the National Hot Rod Association Division 5 Junior Dragster League Championships held Aug. 5-7 at Eddyville Raceway in Eddyville, Iowa. Blaine won in the 10-to-12-year-old division and Ashley won in the 8-to-9-year-old division. It was the first time a brother and sister won at the same event on the same day in the history of NHRA Division 5 Junior Dragster League Championships. Amy submitted the photo.
