Bean’s bees: Richard Bean, of Blossom Trail Bee Ranch of Baldwin City, gathers about 20,000 honey bees (weighing approximately 4 pounds) May 19 on the property of Hank and Mary Willems of rural Lawrence. It took Bean close to an hour to collect the bees. Bean discovered upon examining the queen a few days later that one side of her body had only a half of a limb left and couldn’t fly anymore.

103 candles: Edna Schmidt celebrated her 103rd birthday on May 17 with a family dinner. Schmidt was born and raised in Eudora and has lived in Eudora and Lawrence. She started hand-piecing quilts from scrap material in 1985. Since fall of 2001, she had made 942 quilts. Pictured with Schmidt are her nieces, nephews, and her daughter.
