Piano protégé: Lawrence High School sophomore Yoonji Seo won first place in the American Protégé International Music Talent Competition 2011. The competition is open to instrumentalists, vocalists, and traditional folk and jazz groups of all nationalities and countries. Seo won first place in the area contest, which entitled her to participate in the winners’ recital on March 12 in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Brown wants lawmakers to call a special election June 7 so voters can decide whether to extend increases in the sales, personal income and vehicle taxes enacted two years ago. He also has proposed deep spending cuts to close the nearly $27 billion shortfall. Those cuts account for most of the $14 billion lawmakers shaved off the deficit last week.
