Flight school: Fifth-graders at Prairie Park School are pictured April 5 with “adopted” Southwest Airlines pilot Ken Oliver of Lawrence in Michele Haider-Markel’s classroom. Fifth-graders at Prairie Park and New York schools tracked their class mascot as he traveled with a pilot for a month. The class received daily emails about their mascot’s travels and learned about geography, meteorology and aerodynamics. The month was capped off with a paper airplane contest. LHS junior Anna Balmilero was chosen as one of four Kansas high school students to travel to Paraguay this summer to be a Kansas Youth ambassador. All applicants were required to do a phone interview in English and Spanish at the local and the national level. Piano protégé: Lawrence High School sophomore Yoonji Seo won first place in the American Protégé International Music Talent Competition 2011. The competition is open to instrumentalists, vocalists, and traditional folk and jazz groups of all nationalities and countries.
