Pfc. Christopher Luman, stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington and returning home from Afghanistan, was met by family at Kansas City International Airport. Luman arrived back in the United States July 4 and was able to come home on leave July 23. Pictured from left are Jessica Luman (sister), Debbie Luman (mom), Chris Luman, Brookelynn Shepley (niece), Katie Luman (sister), David Luman (dad), Lindsey Shepley (sister), and Zach Shepley (nephew), all of Lawrence. Also present, but not pictured, were his grandparents, Richard and Carlee Woodson, Lawrence.
Jack Rischer, a Central Junior High School eighth-grader, fourth from left, won the “Smart Strength Star” award Oct. 13 for his great workout form. Also pictured with Jack are Smart Strength trainers, from left, Chris Dellasega, Matt Scanlon, Chad Richards, Isaac Combs and Scott Elliot.
Southwest Junior High School siblings Thomas Peterson, ninth grade, and Megan Peterson, seventh grade, competed in the Collectors Cache Chess Tournament on Oct. 16. The brother and sister team took home the third-place trophy for the K-9 division.
