Runners were warming up around 6:30 a.m. Sunday for the Lynn Electric Kansas Marathon. More than 1,600 runners gathered at the Shenk Sports Complex at 23rd and Iowa streets to compete in the three races offered, a 5K, a half marathon and a marathon. The races benefit Health Care Access Clinic, which serves uninsured and low-income patients in Douglas County.

Runners head west from Naismith Drive on Crescent Road through a residential neighborhood just west of the Kansas University campus. All three races in the Lynn Electric Kansas Marathon wound through southwest Lawrence and the KU campus.

Grade school students can sign up for a free "One Mile At A Time" marathon program that kicks off Sunday at the Clinton Parkway Hy-Vee store in Lawrence. The goal is to run a marathon between Sunday and the 2012 Kansas Half Marathon, which is April 22. Students who reach the goal will be recognized during the April event.
