Scientists say that because the volcano is situated below the glacial ice cap, magma is being cooled quickly, causing explosions and plumes of grit. European Union officials said air traffic could return to half its normal level today if the dense cloud begins to dissipate. Germany allowed some flights to resume.

Runners were warming up around 6:30 a.m. Sunday for the Lynn Electric Kansas Marathon. More than 1,600 runners gathered at the Shenk Sports Complex at 23rd and Iowa streets to compete in the three races offered, a 5K, a half marathon and a marathon. The races benefit Health Care Access Clinic, which serves uninsured and low-income patients in Douglas County.
