<strong>Name:</strong> Sofie Howard<br /><strong>Age:</strong> 4<br /><strong>What she's learned:</strong> The ABCs, numbers and how to spell simple words like cat. She now refers to herself as an artist.<br /> <strong>What the parents like:</strong> Twice the private day cares that Sofie had been in closed down. Mom Heather Howard feared a center would be cold and institutional. "Nothing could be further from the truth," she said. "It does a great job of preparing children for kindergarten."

<strong>Name:</strong> Maverick Eagle<br /><strong>Age:</strong> 4<br /><strong>What he's learned:</strong> Basic numbers and letters, better social interaction and sitting still during story time.<br /><strong>What the parents like:</strong> Angelique EagleWoman, a visiting law professor at KU, said there is a balance between the "child's natural playful nature and also having school readiness skills." She tried two other child care centers before enrolling her son in the pre-kindergarten program.

<strong>Name:</strong> Sam Sharp<br /><strong>Age:</strong> 4<br /><strong>What he's learned:</strong> How to rhyme, what enamel is and a lot about volcanoes.<br /><strong>What the parents like:</strong> Working mom, Sonya Lancaster, said the ratio of two teachers to 16 students is nice. As an only child, Sam gets to spend the day socializing with other children.
