Kansas City, Mo., has been recognized for its efforts to be more sustainable in its city development. Among its projects is the 12th Streetscape project that includes planters at intersections with openings for water runoff. The water passes through to soak ornamental grasses and litter and other larger items are caught and kept from running down storm drains to the river.

The park has several planters that help filter runoff.
