Lisa Harkrader, author of "Airball: My Life in Briefs," attended the River City Reading Festival on Oct. 14. Harkrader's book won the 2006 Juvenile Literary Award from the Friends of American Writers and was selected as a Kansas Notable Book. She lives in Tonganoxie.

Gary Lechliter, Lawrence, was one of the writers on hand for the River City Reading Festival, which was Oct. 14 at the Lawrence Arts Center. Lechliter, who has received the Langston Hughes Award for poetry and the David Ray Award, holds his recent book of poetry, "Under the Fool Moon."

The Douglas County Historical Society honored several individuals and Treanor Architects for excellence in collecting, preserving, teaching and supporting history during a dinner. Oldfather, a longtime philanthropist whose $4 million gift in 2000 started the Douglas County Community Foundation, died Oct. 2.
