Freshwater mussels

Some freshwater mussels have the ability to filter as much as eight gallons of water per day, removing sediment that turns Kansas' rivers chocolate brown. Edwin Miller, a wildlife biologist for Kansas Wildlife & Parks Department, surveyed the river in October.
