Lawrence resident Ruth Sleeper snaps a photo of a friend's arrangement of marigolds Thursday night at the Douglas County Fair. Sleeper took home champion and second-place ribbons for floral design and a third-place ribbon for miniature pastel design.

Hayden Burkhart, 8, catches raindrops in his mouth falling from a rooftop at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. "I'm a farm boy, I don't care," said Burkhart, responding to his friend's criticism of drinking rain water. Light showers moved through Lawrence on Thursday, providing a thirst-quenching refreshment for Burkhart at the fair.
