Welcome to Dien Bien Phu--In 2000 I was walking alone on the outskirts of Dien Bien Phu, close to the borders of China and Laos, when this character, leading a goat on a rope, tugged on my arm motioning for me to follow him to his small home. Dang Xuan Kieu, 77, it turns out, left the North Vietnamese Army as a captain in 1988 and had fought with the Viet Minh when they defeated the French in the battle for Dien Bien Phu. He was wounded several times in his 35 years of battle. He showed me an old headshot taken of him in his uniform, pulled the hat and jacket from a closet and motioned for me to take a new one. Here it is. I hope he got the copy I sent him.
