Bill Snead Retrospective

Trapped in the Mountains-Tents and makeshift shelters dot the windswept Zagros Mountains on the border between Iraq and Turkey near Syria. About 400,000 Kurds, driven from their homes in Iraq by Saddam Hussein's military took refuge in the mountains when the Turks refused to let them off the rocky border to enter Turkey. Overall nearly a million Kurds were driven from their homes and it was estimated that nearly 1,000 of them died daily before medical help and food arrived.
