Young Albanian Field Hands -- After driving through the agricultural areas of Albania, it became obvious that the majority of the field workers, manning the hoes and shovels were young women sometimes joined by a few older men. The supervisors were males usually watching their efforts on horseback. Their work did not interfere with their sense of humor.

Albanian Confessional-On Easter Sunday, 1991, a woman kneels at an outdoor confessional, talking to a Catholic priest. It preceded one of the first church services held in Albania since World War II. Albania's Communist leaders declared believing in God against the law. Many people who professed a belief in God or possessed religions statues were put in prison and suffered horribly under the hands of their guards.

Forrest Lusk is an Elvis impersonator. For his day job he runs the Downtown Restaurant in Elkhart, Kansas. At about sunset, one very warm afternoon, Forrest took his mirror and moved outside to practice his Elvis moves.
Find The Naked Photographer-In 1969 the first "Miss Nude America" contest was held in Naked City, a nudist camp in Indiana. The event drew national coverage. When this group of professionals focused on the main event they were oblivious to their competition and her Kodak Instamatic.
Utica, Kansas High School Class of '93--These girls standing in a Western Kansas wheat field, Hanneke Hollander, left and Stephanie Walker are the senior class of Utica High School. Stephanie was raised on a farm near Utica and her classmate is an exchange student from Holland. Stephanie's parents didn't want her to be the only senior in school. In 1993 the Utica High chorus was a trio.
"In Cold Blood" Killers-In 1963 Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, right, headed for their last hearing to appeal for their lives in federal court in Topeka, Kansas. This was the last picture taken of the two who earlier were convicted of murdering Herbert and Bonnie Clutter and their two children in their Holcolm, Kansas home. The two were hanged in 1965. Truman Capote wrote a best selling novel about Smith and Hickock, "In Cold Blood."

Mountaintop Crossing-A Kurd with his tent and supplies on his back heads back over the mountain towards Iraq while a young mother carrying her child walks towards the refugee camp. Many found the unsanitary conditions to be so bad in the camp that they turned back, ready to take their chances in Iraq.
Survival of the Fittest-Convoys of trucks loaded with food, pots, and pans ? anything that would hold water ?Ã would be empty before reaching older refugees camped on the mountains. Younger refugees would jump in the trucks only halfway to their destination and come away with armloads of utensils and bags of food.Ã Many were Iraqi military deserters.

The event was packed with members of Congress and admirers of the saintly nun who had done so much work in Calcutta. She died at 87 in 1997.
A Mother's Grief-A young Kurdish mother is consoled by a friend as she holds her newborn child that had just died. Many Kurdish refugees trying to survive in the wet and cold mountains died daily.
Napalm Wounds-A young boy stands outside his family's makeshift tent in the Isikveren refugee camp. His face has been disfigured from a napalm attack dropped on his village by Iraqi Air Force planes. There were no medical supplies available to treat his wounds.

Trapped in the Mountains-Tents and makeshift shelters dot the windswept Zagros Mountains on the border between Iraq and Turkey near Syria. About 400,000 Kurds, driven from their homes in Iraq by Saddam Hussein's military took refuge in the mountains when the Turks refused to let them off the rocky border to enter Turkey. Overall nearly a million Kurds were driven from their homes and it was estimated that nearly 1,000 of them died daily before medical help and food arrived.

Stranded on a Mountaintop-Many of the Kurds who were driven from their homes in Iraq by Saddam Hussein's military forces were stranded on the Zagros Mountains that line the border between Iraq and Turkey.Ã Some, like this small group of refugees, stayed near the mountaintops to escape the unsanitary conditions in the large refugee camp halfway down the mountain.

Stan Musial's Last Game-September 29, 1963: Stan Musial, the legendary St. Louis Cardinal slugger, answered questions from the press in the Cardinal dressing room in old Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. He got two hits in his last game and was loudly cheered by a near capacity crowd of 27,576.
Welcome to Dien Bien Phu--In 2000 I was walking alone on the outskirts of Dien Bien Phu, close to the borders of China and Laos, when this character, leading a goat on a rope, tugged on my arm motioning for me to follow him to his small home. Dang Xuan Kieu, 77, it turns out, left the North Vietnamese Army as a captain in 1988 and had fought with the Viet Minh when they defeated the French in the battle for Dien Bien Phu. He was wounded several times in his 35 years of battle. He showed me an old headshot taken of him in his uniform, pulled the hat and jacket from a closet and motioned for me to take a new one. Here it is. I hope he got the copy I sent him.
