Lawrence historian Karl Gridley stands next to the gravestone of Carl C. Rau, who was an early German settler in Douglas County. The gravestone is inscribed in German and dated Nov. 4, 1855. It is one of several gravestones and historical markers at Pioneer Cemetery that Kansas University workers recently uncovered by cutting down overgrown juniper bushes.
