Jazz singer Billie Holiday fights back tears as she listens to a just-created recording in 1959. Friend Milt Hinton, a jazz bassist, captured this intimate image and many other insider's looks at jazz greats of the 20th century.

Milt Hinton, left, was a longtime member of the band of Cab Calloway, who is pictured at right. In addition to taking photos of many famous jazz musicians, Hinton often loaned his camera to others so he could be in the pictures.
