Gordon Parks, 91, an internationally recognised artistic icon, returned to his hometown, Fort Scott, last week where he was honored and discussed at the four-day "Gordon Parks Celebration." Aside from his creative talents, his white mane and mustache have long been the New York City resident's trademarks.

"American Gothic," taken in 1942 in Washington, D.C., remains Gordon Parks' most iconic photograph. The artist, writer, filmmaker and composer is the recipient of the William Allen White Foundation 2006 National Citation.

Parks, a noted photographer, writer, composer and filmmaker, will receive the William Allen White Foundation 2006 National Citation on Friday. Born in Fort Scott, Parks now lives in New York and will be unable to attend the ceremony.
