I am not certain that Richard Hickock is on the right of this photograph as indicated. Certainly it's Perry Smith, but it doesn't look like Hickock nor is he surround by guards as is Smith.

That is richard hickock; you merely can't see the guards accompanying him due to the camera angle. The reason he isn't easily recognizable is because he's cleaned up and dressed up as he was on his way to present himself before a judge as part of his and smith's appeal. most photographs of hickock show him looking ratty, shortly after he and smith confessed.
