A crew from Boy Scout Troop 55 strikes camp at the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada, where they spent five days canoeing. Standing in the back row, from left, are Jerry Ohlemeier, Willie Frick, Austin Winn and Joe Wilson. Sitting in the front row, from left, are Chris Armstrong, Josh Gore, Grady Walker, David Hanson and Will Armstrong. The Scouts ranged in age from 13 to 16. The undefeated Mustangs took first place in the Douglas County Amateur Baseball Assn.'s 9-year-old league and won the postseason tournament. The Lawrence Lightning, Douglas County Amateur Baseball Assn.'s 9-year-old Select Team, won the state championship in Pittsburg. The team finished its one-month season with a record of 21-4, placing second in the Under-10 Ripken Summer Blowout in Princeton, first in the 9-10 Saddle Club Showdown in Wellsville, and fourth in the NBC "Hap Dumont" Under-9 2004 World Series in Bartlett, Tenn. Lance cpl. Gabe Green, Wichita, left, and Lance Cpl. Erik Diffley, Lawrence, send greetings from Iraq back to Kansas. The soldiers were stationed in Iraq in February and returned to the United States in mid-September. Diffley returned to Lawrence earlier this month. He is a 2003 graduate of Free State High School. Students in the Baldwin City Recreation Commission during their "Under the Sea" camp work on pop-bottle terrariums during a rain garden workshop presented by Grace Smith of the Kaw Valley Heritage Alliance. Plants were donated by C-Designs Floral and Garden, Baldwin, Vinland Valley Nursery and Clearfield Farms. Sydney Bui, 2, enjoys her very first ear of corn, which came fresh from the Farmers Market on Vermont Street. Sydney, true to her namesake, has discovered that the best way to handle the task of eating corn on the cob is by holding it "down under." Martha Autem celebrates her 100th birthday on June 25th at Elm Haven West Health Care Center in Parsons. Five generations of family members were in attendance, including her four children, Dora Boore and Wayne Autem, both of Parsons, Hattie Turkington, rural McCune, and Vera Mercer, Lawrence. She has seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mercer submitted the photo.

Emory Hubbell celebrates his 10th birthday by collecting pet food donations for the Lawrence Humane Society for the second year in a row. Emory decided to collect food and supplies from his friends for his birthday instead of asking for gifts. Emory lives in rural southwest Douglas County and is in fifth grade at Wakarusa Valley School. His parents are Kim and Pat Hubbell, who sent in the picture.
