Brownie Wilson of the Kansas Geological Survey measures the depth of water in an irrigation well near Colby. KGS conducts a yearly survey of wells in the Ogallala Aquifer region. The wells are critical to the kind of irrigation farming that supports much of western Kansas, but water levels have been declining steadily for several years.
