A red-bellied woodpecker clings to a tree that has bores. The woodpeckers are bringing light to the tree’s borer problem. Any bark loss from woodpecker pecking is less damaging to the tree than what the borers have already done. Mulch and insecticide treatments are options in dealing with the pests, but identifying what kind of borer species is present in the tree is important.
