Drought conditions crept back over Douglas County and surrounding areas this July, after briefly retreating during a rainy period in April and May. Climatologists say conditions are not nearly as bad as last year's disastrous drought, however, and weather patterns offer a chance for normal seasonal thunderstorms this summer.
Kermit Kalb, who farms land east of Baldwin City, looks over some of his corn crop Thursday after weeks without any significant rain. The next two weeks are critical for the corn, which needs more water as it develops for harvest in the fall.
James McKenzie, a retired Lawrence fireman, and his wife, Susan, ride two of their six high wheel bicycles, also known as Ordinaries. McKenzie collects and restores the bicycles, which were popular in America and England in the 1800s. They will be on display today at the Community Bike Ride hosted by the Lawrence Central Rotary Club. The event begins at 8 a.m. at the Rotary Arboretum at Clinton Lake, 5100 W. 27th St. There will be free t-shirts, helmets, snacks and three routes to choose from: a one-mile, three-mile or 10-mile.
