About 10 a.m. Thursday, a U.S. Postal Service truck was involved in a two-vehicle accident in North Lawrence, near the Slowride Roadhouse on North Third Street. The mail truck was heavily damaged, and the driver was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. A van ran into the back of the truck, which then sent the truck up on a curb.

Please tell me that isn't the lady that delivers the mail to the residential areas in N. Lawrence. She is so wonderful and I hope it wasn't her. Will more information be made available on who was involved? I hope all involved will be ok.

I am sure inattentive driving had nothing to do with this accident. I mean you can hardly see a post office truck, right? It is way past time for law enforcement and the legal system to start writing and enforcing texting laws. Too many people have been hurt and killed already. What is it going to take?

What makes you assume texting was involved? These types of accidents occurred before cell phones and can happen for numerous reasons.

maisy, I don't know how much driving around you do, but next time look around. People are either on their phones talking or texting. inattentive driving due to phone usage is one of the top reasons for crashing.

I was actually driving just behind the driver of the minivan that hit the postal truck (you can see my little red Celica parked just past the mailbox in this photo) and stopped to assist. I can't say with 100% certainty, but I'm confident when I say this was NOT a case of texting while driving. The man who was driving the minivan is a war veteran - in this situation, it really WAS an accident where his attention got diverted for just a moment or two. I don't know him (I spoke with him for a while as the paramedics were treating the mail carrier), but he was sincerely apologetic as he spoke about how he looked at something else on the road for a split second before he hit the mail truck.
note: I know he was a war veteran because the baseball cap he was wearing identified the branch of the military and war in which he served.

Well, gee, as long as he was apologetic all should be forgiven.
Interesting how with anything else in life there would be dire consequences for this kind of thing, but when it comes to driving "it's just an accident."

I think I see where you're going with this. The guy hit the truck on purpose. Or maybe, the mail carrier wanted to ride in an ambulance. "Just an accident"? Think about it.
