Photo by Peter Hancock. Monument Rock, in Gove County, is a 70-foot-tall chalk formation that is rich in fossils. Listed as a National Natural Landmark, it was formed over 80 million years ago when western Kansas sat beneath a large inland sea. The site is on private land but is open to the public.
