Dead pogies float in a fish kill in a pass near Bay Joe Wise on the Louisiana coast, Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010. The area lies in a so-called "dead zone" near the Gulf of Mexico, which is affected by chemical runoff from farms along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is one of several attorneys general attempting to intervene in a lawsuit filed by environmental groups that seeks to impose new regulations on runoff that flows into the Gulf of Mexico from farms, ranches and sewage systems in Kansas and other states in the Mississippi River basin.
