Artificial turf is made of a plastic-like material that allows water to drain into the ground. Lawrence city commissioners went against a staff recommendation and agreed on Tuesday to “grandfather in” more than 20,000 square feet of artificial turf that was installed contrary to city code at a west Lawrence apartment complex. On a 4-1 vote, city commissioners said a development group led by Lawrence businessman Thomas Fritzel could keep the synthetic turf that was installed at the Tuckaway Apartments at Frontier, which is near Sixth and Frontier.

Randy Flory’s family has been milking cows on the Flory dairy farm for more than 60 years in Douglas County. That’s going to change March 7 after the farm will have an auction selling its milking equipment. Soon after, the Florys will begin raising dairy cattle for a massive outfit in Arizona.

The Valor Public Safety Awards honor first responders for their contributions in Lawrence and Douglas County. Children of the award recipients are eligible to receive a one-time education stipend of $1,000 when they begin junior college, university or an accredited technical college.
