The singers are in bright spotlights and the background is dark in this stage scene. Since the photographer is close to the performers he could determine a correct exposure for the whole scene by basing the exposure off the nearest couple at left. With a point-and-shoot camera on autoexposure, one metering technique would have been to direct the camera to the couple at left, press the shutter button half-way to lock the exposure and then reframe the whole stage for the photo.
