Early Native Americans created mounds along ridges in some parts of Kansas. This one, located in Rice County, shows a 160-foot serpent with a ball in its mouth. This photo was taken in the 1980s when an archeologist, researching the serpent mound, mowed down existing grass and poured biodegradable lime across the mount to better highlight its shape.
