And? Nice photo but why is it posted?
I find the lower left hand part of the photo very interesting. Looks like someone jimmied the lock.
It was posted because we're getting married! Duuuhhh!!!
Stop reading so much into the lock. It was a nice spot for the picture (the colored ones are freakin awesome because the door is yellow and we had bright multi-colored shirts on) and the "jimmied lock" adds character to the photograph, don't ya think? :)
I look into that face and I see the same eyes I saw glaring at me at many street corners
in Topeka, KS in the 1990's. Take away the hair and I see Fred.
Actually, I don't recall glaring at all my entire life. & as a matter of fact, my eyes are looking down and you are unable to see the sparkle in them...too bad for you.
Thank you for the information.
Could the jimmied lock in the photo be symbolic of Libby Phelps having broken out?
Not a Topeka wedding, I see. Let's hope she's left the cult.
But, if not, it would be funny if a private event such as this were picketed by concerned citizens. Sort of a preview of the festivities to be enjoyed some day in Topeka.
Ag, chalk the eagle eyes up to my "useless" liberal arts education. The pose and high technical quality of the photo tell me that the photographer was a professional. Even if the clutter in the background was not intentional, a professional would have cropped it out unless there was some reason for it to be there.
Usually I agree with you, but no it wouldn't be funny if their wedding were picketed (although I wouldn't mind a trip to Cozumel).
She shouldn't be punished for the sins of her family. And if she grew up in that atmosphere, I'm sure she has been punished quite enough. Maybe they're going to Cozumel so the family won't picket.
Agreed, that's why I qualified the statement.
ahhh I wish I could hear that Lazlo interview. Love that show.
Libby and Logan, congratulations! I wish you all the happiness in the world in your marriage and future life.
Thank you very much!
Haha...this comment made us laugh! ....even if you weren't trying to be funny...
That's funny considering your recent remarks today about Leonard Pitts, just pointing that out.
I must interpret "Lenny blows" differently than you I guess. :)
Don't you love it when someone gets caught doing the very same thing they chastise others for doing and then insist that's not what they are doing?
hate is a human emotion, everyone has it.
It is a matter of how it is directed.
I took my hate of Phred Phelps and channeled it into doing peer counseling to LGBT youth with a focus on suicide prevention.
What have you done with your hate? besides waste it here on the boards?
I judge phred on his actions, not because of his color or sexual orientation or religious afiliation, but on his actions.
LIBBY HAS LEFT THE CHURCH AND HAS STARTED A NEW LIFE. I WISH HER AND LOGAN ALL THE BEST. PEOPLE ARE READING TOO MUCH INTO THE BROKEN LOCK IN THE PHOTO. LOGAN AND LIBBY ARE VERY HAPPY AND I HOPE IT STAYS THAT WAY, SHE IS A WONDERFUL ASSET TO MY FAMILY AND I LOVE HER VERY, VERY MUCH.
Left the "church?" As of when?
I for one am wishing them both the best.
I can't help but remember that the families at those funerals probably just wanted to be left alone too. I wish her well, but she is just suffering the consequences of her actions.
I understand where you are coming from - but she was just a kid. She still is a kid.
I've done some reading on the members of the Phelps' clan that left and it's a pretty terrible experience. I would have to imagine she had to tow the party line for a while working up the courage to do it. Growing up in that family sure has to screw with a person's head. I imagine it takes a while to "deprogram" all that nonsense. At least she figured it out and did it.
If you can't forgive her for these actions you're no better than Fred himself. She couldn't help who she was born to any more than you and I can.
Yeah George! Leave me alone! George is a funny name; I just like to write it down and say it out loud. Is that alright with you, George?
If she supposedly left the "church" in March of 2009, then why is she obviously still actively involved seven months later?
Didn't say I didn't forgive her, if her views have changed, but that she should realize that there will still be consequences. Just the same as any kid doing something stupid in his youth that follows him for years. I imagine peer presure can be a strong influence much like family pressure.
I wish them both well, too. It's not easy to lose baggage from your past, especially family baggage.
However, I too have trouble looking at that face and not seeing the same face out on the street corners holding a hateful sign. How old was she in 2009? If she was over 18 then and had still been involved in the picketing activities up until then, well...she's got to expect some people remembering her in that way.
If she truly is through with all that, I hope she also at least privately is sorry for it too.
If you have trouble looking at my face without seeing the same face you saw in earlier years you would know about how old I was. It's real simple...think of the last time you saw me and what age you thought I was, then add the years up that followed. Stop acting like you recognize me. You don't know me and I don't know you. Get over it. We're getting happily married so stop hatin!!!
If you have left the Westboro "church", why don't you just say so? It would help clear up a lot of questions and would certainly put you in a more positive light.
There is an interview Ms Phelps did with the Religion in Kansas project recently -
Counseling is never a bad idea - wish her, her fiancee, and little one well.
Libby and Logan, congratulations on your engagement!
Strange comment .. watching too much Showbiz Tonight?
The child is older - from a previous relationship from what I hear.
What in the world does your last sentence mean?
It was my understanding that you have a child? If that is not accurate, I will apologize of course.
Hahaha...no I don't have a child silly. I'm not married yet. Hopefully we'll have some cute chubby little cheeks to pinch in a few years :)
"You don't know me and I don't know you. Get over it. We're getting happily married so stop hatin!!!"
I hope this is also your new philosophy on life and you no longer are "hatin" gays, Jews, the military and America. A simple "I'm sorry about the picketing and I regret it" would assure people you have changed.
I totally agree that an apology is due! I'm actually not overly sure that she can blame her attitude entirely on the so-called church.
"In the testimonial, Libby and Jael explain that they hope and pray that no one outside of Westboro becomes "elect", because they want everyone else in the world to die horribly and burn in Hell, and that even if they did not believe their actions were dictated by God, they would still do and enjoy them anyway."
In other words, even if she weren't in the church, she'd love doing the same kind of thing. She isn't in the church and she won't apologise, so what does that lead us to believe?
We are all stuck with our families. Some have more to overcome than others. Good luck with that.
You guys are cracking me up! You understand when you get engaged, it's socially acceptable to post an engagement announcement with a picture?? Once you submit your information (including the picture), it is out of the control of the submitter. Funny how everyone keeps referring to my "hatin" comment...my fiance was the one who told me to say that! Isn't he cute?? :)
So Libby, have you changed your opinions at all about Jews, America, the military and gays? It looks like your reasons for leaving the church were personal, not about their views. Come on, tell us about how you have changed.
Why do we need to know if she has changed her opinions? Does the issue at hand (that being her engagement and pending marriage) weigh on if she has changed her opinions? And why should she change her opinions?
This isn't an article on Libby and how she's changed her ways. This is a thread hijacked from the "couples" section by whoever the first commenter was, clearly trying to stir something up. And they have done remarkably well if it is still in the most discussed tab five days later.
I think the public curiousity about Libby is justifiable in that she spent the majority of her ilfe in a very public manner. As a child, certainly there was little choice, as an adult she is assumed to have made her own choices (and that includes leaving Westboro.)
Some posters are curious about what her current feelings are in regard to homosexuality, the military, etc. because of the extremilty of Westboro's views, and maybe they have witnessed the picketing? Maybe they recognize her from their child's high school graduation, a concert, a funeral....
Maybe they see irony in the fact that she wants to free from scrutiny and judgment about how she lives her life. Something the families burying their own, the celebrating high schoolers and military members, and the gays that are our family members, neighbors, co-workers and friends weren't given by Westboro (I can't call it a church).
Most posters have wished her well with her upcoming marriage, as do I. Most would have been happy to see her make a statement that in some way refutes the extreme views and hatefulness that Westboro represents. Everyone deserves a second chance, the benefit of the doubt, and so on, but I expect that courtesy will not be extended if her viewpoints remain unchanged.
Very well said!
we need a "like" button on LJW
Awww! Please accept the warmest of congratulations I can convey through the internets. Hope your new life together is full of happiness and warm-gooey fuzzies!
What a beautiful couple...seriously.
And awesome photo!
Dunno why this just popped up on the list of articles, but I worked for the groom's father years ago when he had an electrician's business. If the son is anything like the father, I think this young lady has landed herself one heck of a good guy.
As to her side of things, back the frick up.
We might have issues with part of her family, but unless you see her out there, chanting away with the rest of her family, store it. If she is, I've pretty sure that Dave will have a word or two to say about it. Since I don't look too closely at them while they picket, I've got no proof to the contrary.
Wish them both the best.
