A house destroyed by a Wednesday morning fire smolders Thursday in Big Springs. The blaze started in the house at 87 U.S. Highway 40 and spread next door and destroyed an antiques store as well, said H. Wayne Riley, chief of Lecompton Fire/EMS. The fire about 1 mile east of the Shawnee County line started about 9:15 a.m., and it took firefighters from several townships about three hours to get it under control. Officials also closed the highway until about 3 p.m. Jane Blocher, executive director of the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross, said the couple at the damaged home don’t have family in the area. The Red Cross will put them up in a hotel through Sunday. No injuries were reported other than a cat that was not found, Riley said. The residents of the house were not home at the time.
