1st Lt. Paul Shipley (Class of 2007) with Capt. Alex “Meatloaf” Ramthun (Class of 2000). Both are members of 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, and are deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Capt. Ramthun is the battalion’s air officer and is responsible for naming any Landing Zone (LZ) the battalion is operating out of. When 1/6 captured the city of Marjah, previously held by the Taliban, Ramthun had the perfect name ready for the new LZ - LZ Jayhawk. It serves as 1/6’s lifeline for supplies, troop movement and casualty evacuation. This will remain a tribute to the Jayhawks as long as it is in operation, even when 1/6 returns home to Camp Lejuene, North Carolina at the end of its seven-month deployment. (This is particularly galling to the battalion commander of 1/6, Lt. Col. Calvert Worth, a graduate of the University of Missouri).
